RW's Story: "I was expelled from school. What I did was wrong, I know, but I wanted to make up for it, not sit at home for a year. My TeamChild advocate encouraged me to get into counseling and to start doing community service hours. She then negotiated with the school district and we created a plan that would allow me back in school. I'm so happy to be back in school. I'll be able to show everyone that I can do well." Victor's Story Victor,16, was expelled from school for a year because of a one-time disciplinary matter that resulted in criminal charges. TeamChild advocated on his behalf with school officials and helped create an education plan to meet both the school's and the youth's needs. As a result, Victor was allowed back into school and successfully completed probation on his criminal matter. This year he completed the ninth grade. Tom's Story Tom is a 15-year-old who had not attended school for close to two years. His mother was terminally ill and unable to help him enroll in school. Facing potential truancy and shop-lifting charges, Tom was referred to TeamChild by his public defender. TeamChild got Tom back in school and secured other appropriate services to address his many needs. TeamChild also provided Tom with a volunteer tutor who gives him encouragement and support. Sarah's Story Sarah is a 13-year old whose drug-addicted parents lived on the street and had left her in an overcrowded and abusive relative's home. Sarah applied on her own to DSHS for a foster home, but DSHS failed to act. TeamChild advocated for Sarah and secured a foster placement, as well as intensive counseling and mental health services. TeamChild also advocated for Sarah's school to provide special education services to address previously unidentified learning disabilities.
